The Carlyle Sherstad 5K/10K is named after a great promoter of running in Grantsburg. Carlyle Sherstad was the founder and organizer of the 16.2 mile Grantsburg race called the "Syttende Mai." That race was an annual event for many years and drew hundreds of runners from all over the Midwest.
Burnett Medical Center organizes The Carlyle Sherstad 5K/10K and donates all profits. The recipient in 2013 is the The Friends of the Grantsburg Library for the future expansion of the library.
In addition to the 5K/10K run/walk, we held the fifth annual "Kiddie Carlyle." This 100-yard dash is for children ages 7 and younger. Every child that crossed the finish line received a medal.
Trophies were awarded to the overall top male and female winners in both the 5K and 10K events. Paul Gzeszic was the top male 5K finisher with a time of 19:28 and Jenna Ruiz was the top female finisher with a time of 22:46. In the 10k event, Dan Carlson was the top male finisher with a time of 36:09 and Cate Hayman was the top female finisher with a time of 47:42. In addition to these awards, medals were awarded to the first 3 male and female finishers in each of 9 categories: Pre-teen, 13-16 yrs, 17-19 yrs, 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70+ yrs.
