The Carlyle Sherstad 5K is named after a great promoter of running in Grantsburg. Carlyle Sherstad was the founder and organizer of a 16.2 mile Grantsburg race, called the "Syttende Mai." That race was an annual event for many years and drew hundreds of runners from all over the Midwest. This year Darlene Sherstad, Carlyle's widow, completed the race along with her five children and a number of grandchildren. Burnett Medical Center organizes The Carlyle Sherstad 5K and donates all profits. The recipient in 2010 is the Community Referral Agency, Inc., an organization dedicated to the empowerment of battered individuals and their children, serving Burnett and Polk counties. The fifth annual race had 299 participants up from 211 last year. Trophies and roses were awarded to the top overall male and female finishers. Medals were awarded to the first three male and female finishers in each of nine categories. Matt Reiland of Durand, WI was the overall male finisher with a time of 18:56 and Lauren Howe of Siren, WI was the overall female finisher with a time of 20:46. In addition to the 5K run, we held the second annual "Kiddie Carlyle." This 100-yard dash was for children ages 7 and younger. Every child who crossed the finish line received a medal. Business sponsors, volunteers, and participants make this event successful. Business sponsors get their company's name printed on the back of event t-shirts.
